Renfield actually took the receiver away from his ear and stared at it for a moment in disgust at the chewing sounds. Mammals have such disgusting eating habits, he thought, nevermind that they probably think the same thing about toads.
"Yes, Mr. Chairman," Renfield said, returning the receiver to his face, "I'm sorry to interrupt your lunch, but I thought it wise to call you up and inform you that the interrogations you had scheduled for later today... well, they won't be happening. Dr. Croaker and his associates have escaped from Genus."

*There is a deep, almost apologetic sigh on the other end of the phone *
"Yes I heard about that.. I'm just glad to know you made it back safely. That's more than enough consolation. Maybe we should assign you a personal bodyguard?"

Renfield actually smiled as he pulled open his desk drawer and got out the cricket jar, knowing that it was safe for him to grab a snack over the phone since he could just pass the crunching off as lettuce or something.
Stuffing a handful into his mouth and chewing, he swallowed and said, "It's nice to know you care about my personal well-being, Mr. Chairman, but that won't be necessary. How would it look if a member of the Security Council hid behind bodyguards?"

"Ha... my advisors would advocate a very different path of reasoning Renfield. They never cease trying to persuade me to hire more! I can understand your reluctance though... I can only warn you to be careful. You've made yourself extremely indispensable so it's only a matter of time before you become an obvious target for assasination...", sighed Warner.

"Well, really sir, you needn't fear for my safety. Speaking of which, are you aware of the strange ferret living in the railway tunnels?"

"Erm... strange ferret... er... are we talking about some charity case here Billings? Do you want me to send an officer from the nearest homeless shelter to pick him up?", replies the rather confused Warner.

"Well, no," he said, "I was thinking more along the lines of a battalion of heavily-armed security guards. He's apparently some kind of delusional maniac who thinks he's a vampire, and there seem to be a couple of civilians who are after him. It was quite chaotic down there, what with them and the toads..."

"Well there's certainly alot more going on under our noses than we are aware of... erm... I know I'm being strange here but... is he really a vampire? How should our troops dispose of him?", there's a gulp from the other end of the phone, "Our soldiers are good in combat alright but I don't know if they're upto all that... staking and decapitation...".

"Indeed. Most distasteful, and think of the frelling media storm that would result if he turned out to be just an ordinary ferret. Well, I'll leave it up to you, Fritz," Renfield said, surprising himself by calling the Chairman by his first name. "You are the Chairman of the UAC, after all. Anyway, I think we should discuss this little matter later. I have... another engagement I need to get to." He didn't mention that fact he was going to have to go back to the Military Railway because the last thing he needed was anyone getting overprotective on him.

"Okay then I'll let you get on with your day. Stay out of trouble! Do you want to schedule a meeting, commander?", enquires Fritz.

"Of course I'll stay out of trouble," Renfield said with a knowing chuckle. "It's me we're talking about, isn't it? As to the meeting..." he paused to get out a daily planner and thumbed through it, "how is tomorrow at about noon?"

"Thats fine by my schedule... i think you missed a hidden message in my last statement though Renfield", says Fritz (rather smugly), "Would you like me to repeat it commander?".

Renfield's eyes widened. Commander? Was he being promoted? "C--Commander? Uh, did I just hear you say I got promoted, sir?"

"Congratulations Renfield you are most perceptive", chuckles Warner, "You've been a favourite for promotion amongst the council for quite some time now. You sound surprised! After all the work you've done you must have known it was due. In the words of the defence secretary you are 'one of the most valuable assets the UAC holds'".

Renfield could feel his heart pounding in his chest with excitement, and in the moment, he forgot who he was and why he was here. All that mattered was the joy of promotion. It meant a bigger office, and more influence, more chances to get things done to combat those filthy toa-- Renfield stopped himself in mid-thought. He really was spending too much time among the mammals!
Only a few seconds had gone by since Fritz finished speaking, and finally Renfield, back on track, said, "Thank you, sir. It is an honor and privalige to accept this promotion. I'll do my best not to let you and the Council down." A pause as he remembered the note in his suit pocket. "Well, I won't keep you any longer sir. I have a previous engagement I have to get to with, uh, Corporal Stirling. Will there be anything else?"
