So 6 years after season 5 ended and nearly 20 years after season 2 started, and 12 years after I first discovered the site (going by my old account's activity), I thought it'd be interesting to reread the webseries and start a little discussion about each episode as I go. Note, I've not listened to the season recap podcast yet, I shall do it once I've read all the episodes, thought it'd be more interesting that way.
The first episode had a surprisingly slow start, likely necessitated by the introduction of old and new characters alike. The way the classic characters were introduced, one by one with their little personality infused interactions, was pleasant. Though, as a brit, I always roll my eyes at "British accent" and, usually, imagine such characters with a thick Yorkshire accent out of spite
The we have the introduction of Bugs and Daffy, I mean Fritz and Kadaf, the first new characters of the web series, who are definitely not references to any other fictional characters. It was certainly a brave choice to start of with a dose of politics, but then The Phantom Menace was still a year away. There's also a nice hint at some back story between Fritz and Bucky. From what I remember of Fritz' arc and background, it's quite amusing that he was put so front and center, I wonder how planned out his character was at this point. There's also a nice moment that show's Bucky's first instinct during an attack is to draw his blaster.
I feel Al's plan to get one of the Righteous' crew to assassinate Fritz to be a bit iffy, but I suppose it is a plan B. And Deadeye's double turn at seeing Fritz' nature was a bit conveniently quick, though he also didn't expect to need a plan B. It's here we also get introduced to the ongoing, webseries based, idea of inter-dimensional re-generators, though I feel revealing that about Fritz and Kadaf so soon was a bit iffy. Though I like think that this alternate Earth they came from is the same that Who Framed Roger Rabbit is set.
The final of my notes is about Al Negator's currently unknown employer. Only a couple of sentences in reference, but feels like the set up for a Big Bad though I can't remember if that does lead to something...
All in all, a nice little episode. Sure, it doesn't grab you from all angles, but it's got a little bit of action and some nice character development, and enough intrigue to get you reading the next episode.
