Congradulation!!! Well, to celebrate... ;D ;D ;D LET"S GET THIS BOARD PARTY STARTED!!! ;D ;D ;D *sets up a kick@$$ stereo system and puts it on standby* Awesome! Thanks :-D My favorite genres are new wave and post-punk (from 1977 into the '80s -- Talking Heads, Blondie, The Cars, U2, The Police, Elvis Costello, The Jam, etc.). I actually did a radio show at my college for 3.5 years. I'll miss it :-/

Congrats, Rygar, the big ol' wide world beckons.... until you go into Higher Ed. And I have to say I approve of your music taste! Although mine isn't restricted to that era, I gotta concur that The Police's Outlandos D'Amour and Blondie's Parallel Lines are amongst the best albums ever. And you will all listen to them. Ooooh, and early U2/Jam stuff is pure class. Strange, though, I didn't think the latter were really well known in the US. And the Cars song Drive is one of my "growing-up" songs.

Congrats, Rygar, the big ol' wide world beckons.... until you go into Higher Ed. Yep, I'll be back in school come August. Definitely good stuff, though I'm not a huge Police fan. In terms of favorites, I think my taste skews a bit more toward the weirder stuff, like Devo, Oingo Boingo, Wall of Voodoo, and Adam Ant. The Jam, along with most of the UK bands I played on my show, really weren't popular in the US (didn't Madness have a dozen top-ten hits over there?), but I managed to find out about them, and now I own pretty much everything by them. I own way too many CDs -- a little more than 900, at last count. -Rygar

900? Wow, serious collector. A number I can only aspire to.... dammit. In any case, absolutely right, the Jam were massive here in Blighty in their peak late 70's/early 80's period, with about 4 number ones including Going Underground and Town Called Malice. Weller has settled down since and moved into acousticky 'dad rock' (albeit high quality dad rock) - the very thing he sneered at Clapton for doing....hmmm.
Madness similarly were top of the league in the early 80's and had about that many top tens - Baggy Trousers is still an all-time favourite - and they still tour; in fact I just missed out on seeing them in my university city last year. Dammit again. I believe Our House was their only US hit - understandable, as it's much commercially slicker than their regular output but still unmistakably Madness.
I've barely heard of any of those others you mentioned, apart from Adam Ant, who was another big star of that era over here but never appealed to me personally. In a slightly different vein of music, there's a big fuss being made over Nick Drake here at the minute (Brad Pitt is a big fan, and has just narrated a radio doc for us about him) so I checked out some of his stuff and it's quality - highly recommended if anyone's after something new...!
