Well, I went through the book last night. The soldiers called in to cordon off Horsell Common were a company of Royal Artillery, all commanded by a Brigadier.
We must also remember that this wasn't too long after the Napoleonic Wars, and there was some real hardware used in those wars, so it would be very probable that this firepower would be used against any Martians.

What exactlywas their firepower then?

There was an error to my last post, I'm sorry. It wasn't Royal Artillery, and I will not only correct this, but also state their firepower.
Company from No. 12 Horse Artillery - Ten 6-Pounder cannons along with 92 troops, all armed with rifles (Type of rifle not specified)
Cardigan Regiment - Twenty 12-Pounder cannons along with 500 troops, again armed with rifles and also grenades.
Barricade to the North of England in the Midlands (Especially at Crewe) uses several square miles of barbed wire along with land-mines, more 12-Pounder guns and the entire of the Warwickshire and Gloucestershire Regiments (2,000 troops each, an average total of 4,000)
Naval Defence - A fleet of 25 Dreadnoughts, 11 Ironclads and an unspecified number of frigates (Estimate of 17).

I don't think the Martians would have stood a chance. As soon as I knew that an ironclad could destroy a tripod I would have used the same cannons on land.
Don't know how the english thought back then but it seems logical to me.

You can't trust the American film industry with anything.
I figured this film would probably be rubbish anyway... maybe not a bad film in itself, but bad when you look at what it did to the original book.

I agree with Ramirez. Yes, the American Media are prone to altering the originals, but that's only the media, not America in total.
The Martians could've stood a chance. Remember that an ironclad can move at well over 20 mph, whereas the average running speed of a soldier (regardless of weight, height etc.) is about 11 mph, plus they need to wait until they recieve orders from their officers. As the naval vessels are fairly confined, orders can be sent quicker.

The American industry sucks when it comes to those things. Take a look at Ring 2. The Jap ver was way better

Before we judge American industry too harshly, we musn't forget that we Brits are just as bad, as the discussion involving the BOH DVD has shown. Besides, there are some good films of theirs I enjoyed, it's just that I hate it when people disrespect the works of HG Wells, that's all.

The Ring was terrible... the US REd Dwarf was cancelled after the pilot episode for good reason, and I dread to think what the US version of The Office is like.
I think the main problem is that ths US film companies want maximum profit, so they attempt to make the film appeal to as many people as they can. This involves changing the original, as not enough people would care. I doubt many Americans would want to see a film about aliens landing somewhere in England and trying to level some town they have never heard of, but when a large US city is under attack... oh, that must be good.
Idiots.
I'm going to have to try looking up this BOH DVD discussion though... I didn't find a problem with mine.
EDIT - were you talking about the stolen website material? Or have they edited bits out or somehing stupid like that?

Get it right. It was cancelled twice after two completely different pilot episodes both failed. Why do people insist on taking a successful concept and changing it beyond recognition? Why make Batman Begins when you can make a film of Batman: Year One?
