As soon as Padd was gone, Renfield smiled and put an arm around Vernita. "Feeling okay?" he asked tenderly.

Vernita sighed, leaning her head into Renfield's shoulder. "I'm so tired. My whole head is foggy."

"Well, you've had a very hard day. If it's all right with Major Padd, I'll walk you home so you can rest."

Eventually, Major Padd re-appeared in her panther disguise.
"Well, Renfield. Seeing as this was your idea, what do you suggest we do now?" she asked, trying to calm down.

"Um, well, as I was saying to Vernita, I think perhaps the best thing for her to do right now is go home and get some rest," Renfield replied, noting how convincing Padd's panther disguise was.

"On her own, of course." Padd answered, making sure that Renfield wasn't going too far for her own liking.

Vernita stood quietly, unsure of her current position in this crossfire...

"On her own?" Renfield parrotted, looking a bit surprised as he stared at Padd.

"Yes," nodded Padd. "We all need to learn to fly solo when the time comes. I don't mind you two meeting up when off-duty, but right now, I want to make sure that Miss Lapis is actually suitable for the position. To do that, I think she needs some time on her own."

Renfield nodded. Padd was right. And besides, he could tell that she did not like him being close to Vernita, at least not right now. He determined it was better for all three of them if he and Vernita spent a bit of time apart. He was, after all, a very big source of the poor girl's trauma. However, paying lip service to Vernita while still coming off as a professional to Padd, Renfield said, "Perhaps you're right, Major. I'm sure Vernita can take care of herself, though."

"So it's sorted," Padd smiled. "We shall all rendezvous at Genus Control at 0700 hours tomorrow morning. Until then, I think you should continue with your charades. The last thing we need is the mammals getting suspicious."

Vernita yawned and turned away, shambling in the direction of her apartment. Offering a lazy 'good night' she began to stumble towards the road, still lost in a fog.

Padd watched as Vernita dragged herself away, and turned to Renfield.
"See you tomorrow, Renfield," she smiled. "Remember, you weren't here when everyone died of a gas explosion, OK?" She pulled out some plastic explosive and gestured it in front of the Renfields' nose.

Renfield was so busy watching Vernita leave he didn't notice the explosive until Padd held it in front of his nose, making him step back in surprise. "What? A gas explosion?"

"Well, we can't just leave these bodies to go slimy until someone discovers them," Padd explained. "It'll arouse suspicion in the UAC. By simply placing this in the exterior piping, then you have an instant gas explosion. Get the picture?"
