"V-Vernita," Renfield said as she embraced him, the faux hare suddenly feeling very nervous, and unsure of what to do. The past few days had left him uncertain of his priorities. One moment he regretted cooperating with his fellow toads, the next he was enjoying undermining the mammals. It was complicated individuals like Prof. Simmons and now Vernita Lapis that did this to him.
At the moment, regardless of who's side he was one, Renfield couldn't help but feel sorry for Vernita and what he had inadvertently put her through. That, and he had to admit he was still attracted to her. He wrapped his arms around her tightly and hugged her. "It's okay," he whispered, shivering a bit himself, "I'm not going to let them hurt you..."

Vernita hugged Renfield tight, trying to squeeze in breaths between her sobs. Words became choked and died in the conflict. Her ears raised and fell with each shuddering gasp.
"Ren... I... I don't know any... Anymore what to... What to do... What do... What do I...?"
She looked up into his eyes, her own becoming a pair of shimmering jaden pools, pouring forth the liquid residue of fear, panic, and despair.

"There, there," Renfield soothed, forcing himself to reach up and pat Vernita's head and stroke the back of it. "Don't worry, I'll straighten everything out."
At this point, Wadman, Stavros and Englund emerged from the bushes with maser pistols drawn, and they stopped and stared at the sight of Renfield embracing Vernita. "S-sir?" said Wadman. "Uh, what are you doing?"
"Just stay back, all three of you," Renfield said, holding up one paw in their direction, the other continuing to stroke Vernita's hair.
"B-b-but Major Padd said--" began Stavros.
"I don't care what Major Padd said," barked Renfield. "When it all comes down to it, you all work for me, and I'm telling you not to touch a hair on Vernita Lapis' head, got it?"
Dumbfounded, the three could only nod and slowly return their pistols to their shoulder holsters concealed beneath their jackets.

Vernita clung to Renfield, whispering in hushed tones over and over again: "What now? What now?" Her legs shook under her weight, energy leaving her as quickly as her control over her life, her senses, and her judgement was fleeing.

Turning his attention back to Vernita, Renfield said, "Well, now, I think we need to get you inside where you can put some clothes on. Come on, which way is your apartment?"

"No! We... We can't go there... They... They're watching me... I... I don't think it's safe... Just... Can't you hide me somewhere? What if... What if you maybe pretended to... To take me into custody." She looked up at him, pleading through her eyes. "They would believe you, yea?"

Renfield frowned and started trying to think of what to do. It was obvious there was no way he could persuade Vernita to return to her apartment, so where should he take her? Back to his office?
"We could always return to my office, although I really think we need to get you some clothes first," he said quietly, then unbuttoned and removed his suit jacket and put it around the female hare's shoulders. "I assure you you'll be safe there."

Vernita nodded to Renfield, wiping her eyes. She curled up inside the jacket, feeling slightly comforted by its cover. She lowered her head, trying to hide her face from any would-be watchers. Led by Renfield's arm, she proceeded with him towards wherever he would lead her.

Keeping one arm around Vernita's shoulders, Renfield led her from the gardens and back to the offices. Wadman and the other two watched them go, then Wadman took out his communicator and contacted Major Padd about the matter.

Arm-in-arm with Ayla, Bartholomew Cryer walked into the Memorial Gardens. He was leery about returning here, since it was here that not too long ago his life had started to fall beginning when he'd earned a punch in the mouth for spitting on the war memorial.

Ayla slid up against Cyer while walking and slipped her arm around his waist.
"SO which part of the Gardens would you like to see?" She asked gently.

"Well, what is there to see? I've only ever come here once and that was a long time ago."

Cryer smirked a bit. "I never would've guessed," he said. "It's nice to have such an impressive garden like this in the middle of such a bustling metropolis. It seems, er, a nice place to come and unwind."

Ayla smiled as she looked down at him.
"Yes, it is a wonderful place to unwind, but it also feels out of place here in the middle of the city." She saidquietly. "Though there are its quiet places init as well."
