OOC: Now the time has come to provisionally select your characters abilities. These are not permanent choices at this stage.
There are four areas that your character can have skill in: Shooting, melee, piloting and engineering. At this stage you can take three abilities. In each category you can select either a +1 bonus to everything in that category, or a +1 bonus for a specific piece of gear and an additional ability that does not modify your dice roll. For example, you might chose to have +1 to pistol marksmanship and the ability to draw and fire in a single action, or the ability to fire two pistols at once. Or +1 to hand-to-hand combat scores when using a sword and the ability to disarm an opponent. Alternetly you could take a piece of exotic equipment, or something that I haven't even thought to mention.
Feel free to think about this and discuss with me either here or by PM the sort of thing you want your character to have. I'll try and tailor scenarios towards stuff that your characters can actually do.
IC: You enter a large square room. There are equipment lockers with keypad locks around the walls. At the far side there is what looks like a shower area. Evenly spaced around the other walls are palmscan locked doors. Each door has a number on it, and some of them have 'in use' signs over them. Harakim heads over to a locker marked 'Required: Protective Clothing'. He opens it and removes a pair of photofilter goggles and headphones with a throatmic attachment. He leaves the locker open and stands aside for you to get at it.

"It is not a matter of personal concern, Arius. If it turns out that you have committed those offences then the company is liable. So answer plainly please, have you ever comitted those offences, yes or no." Oh...no i did not.

"Excellent."
Mr Weatherby visible relaxes. He sits back in his chair.
"So, we've established that you know your way around a rifle. Do you have any other relevant skills?"

"The ability to move around without being noticed is always useful when you're playing hide and seek with a boarding party. Far easier to shoot someone who doesn't know that you're there, hm?"

OOC: *smiles* is supposed to be outside the speech marks, right?
Also OOC: This thread is set about twenty years before the TV series starts. Corsair Canards are very much enemy number one.
IC: "There is that. It’s about the only duck expression I recognise."
He waves a hand.
"Of course, a lot of what we do is sitting in a small room for days without diversion. Pirate attacks are rare, even in this neck of the woods. They know that if they keep attacking the merchants will either stop flying or tool up too much to be inviting targets. There are about... what... ten thousands interstellar flights leaving and arriving in Ultess proper or in the orbital stations each month, and its a bad month where we have more then ten attacks in our jurisdiction. Our main concern at the moment is what happens when the Toads cotton on to the idea of economic warfare."

Harakim closes and locks the locker. He then walks over to the door marked "Training Room 3: Guns, L&M". He enters a code on the keypad and scans his palm. The door opens and he steps inside.

Mr Weatherby shrugs.
"Member worlds have always been very protective of local law enforcement rights. Besides, hunting down pirate bases is ruinously expensive. They have enough trouble passing the SPACE's budget as it is."

"Hng. Should not be left unlocked. Will discipline previous user."
Harakin walks to a control console towards the front of the firing area. It puts you in mind of a bowling computer. At a touch the cases on the walls snap shut.
"We start you on mazer rifle. Nice big stationary targets."
He presses some more buttons and various mechanisms in the wall humm and whir. A hatch opens in the area that bowling balls would come from and a mazer rifle rises up on a stand. The room you are in is about 100 meters long. Half way down its length a target about 1 meter square lowers from the roof with a circular target painted on it.

OOC: Please remember what I said at the start. Some tasks, such as those relating to combat, will have their success determined by dice rolls. Shooting is probably the most notable.
Your character is firing at a standard sized target within normal range of the weapon you are using. Normally you would hit 5+, but since you have taken a shooting advancement you will hit 4+. I'm rolling a dice...
You got a 1. Please describe your charaters miss.
