Sonic X: Collision - Part 3
Chapter One
The first of his senses to return to him was his hearing.
As the effects of the chloroform finally died off, the sound of someone playing Greensleeves reached his ears. Drowsily, his heavy eyelids twitched open, and the first thing that came into view was a portable radio, which had been switched on and was now lying on the remains of a wall.
"Well, well, well" a sultry voice purred into Mac's ear. "Looks like you're awake, Fluffy,"
The owner of the voice hoved into view. From his seated position on the ground, the fruitbat looked gigantic. The cobalt-blue fringes of her gloves and boots glowed gently in the sunlight, matching the broken-heart motif of her suit which, were it not for the latticed string in between, would have been torn open by her clevage.
"Who...who are you?" Mac croaked hoarsely. He tried to stand, but found himself tied down to the drum of what had once been a stone column. The bonds were so tight that they burned his wrists each time he moved.
"An interested observer," the bat answered haughtily, pacing about the ruined courtyard as her green eyes scanned the squirrel suspiciously. "A universe gets wiped out, the Master Emerald goes missing, and you suddenly turn up out of nowhere. No wonder Scourge was so keen to find out what the hell was going on here,"
"Who or what is Scourge?" Mac asked irately, but was silenced by a slap across the face.
"I'll ask the questions, sweetie," the bat continued. "Tell you what. If you tell me all that you know, then I'll tell you what you want to know, huh?"
"Not interested,"
"Oh, you will be," an evil smile spread across the bat's thin, teal-coloured lips. "When I've finished with you,"
Chapter Two
The echidna ruins were as vast as they were silent. What had once been a thriving metropolis many years ago was now nothing more than the crumbling remains of a deserted ghost town, of little value to anyone but the most fanatical of archaeologists.
The only audible sound that Knuckles could hear was the echoing taps of his own footsteps. But there was something about this place that made him believe that he wasn't alone.
Knuckles gave a yelp as he stumbled on a loose tile, and as he came to his senses, he noticed an orange, gloved hand offering to help him up.
"Tikal," Knuckles spoke to the orange echidna before him as he got up. "Where is the Master Emerald?"
"It is safe," came the simple response. "It returned to its resting place after Mephiles attempted to drain it of its power. But there is little time. Come,"
She gestured for Knuckles to follow her, and the two ventured down the maze of deserted streets and alleys that were once the life-blood of the ruined city, now simply monuments to their unnamed builders.
Eventually, they reached what must have been the very centre of the city. The area was a large, open space with a small building at its centre. The building looked to be a cross between a sacrificial altar and a gazebo, decorated with marble pillars that supported a domed roof with an opening where the cupola should have been.
And there, sat within the structure, pulsating gently as its power was slowly restored, was the Master Emerald.
"At high noon," Tikal explained in her soft, cooing voice. "The sun will be directly over this altar. The sunlight shall fall through the space in the dome, and the energies stolen by Mephiles will be restored to the Master Emerald,"
"And the antiverse?"
Tikal did not answer, for like Knuckles, she was uncertain of the outcome herself.
Chapter Three
"OK, so we've got your name sorted out," the bat answered as she rubbed her knuckles. "You're Captain Macclesfield Michael "Mac" O'Damia. You were a soldier in your own universe, and you were transferred to this one just before it was destroyed. Care to tell me why?"
Mac looked up through his good eye. His other was closed tight and was gradually blackening around the edges. There was a small trickle of blood seeping from his mouth, but still he remained defiant.
"You're guess is as good as mine," he spoke in a muffled voice. "Perhaps you should ask the one called Mephiles. He was the one who started this mess,"
"Don't get funny with me, boy," snarled the bat. "Anyone still living will tell you that it's unwise to cross Rogue the Bat!"
"So, you're name's Rogue, is it?" Mac raised an eyebrow. "I was going to go with Messalina,"
"Shut up," Rogue landed another slap across Mac's face, and pulled a small hunting knife from her boot with a free hand. "I've slit the throats of stronger people than you with this, and if you keep pushing yourself, you'll feel for yourself just how sharp it is,"
What happened next was hard to describe. A blue blur had suddenly appeared in front of Mac's eyes, and in the space of two seconds, Sonic had suddenly appeared, and was trying to wrest the knife from Rogue's hand. Even as the two continued fighting, the knife flew out of the firing line, and landed next to Mac.
"OK, precious," Sonic had sneered as he landed another blow to Rogue's stomach. "Let's see how you like getting picked on!" But the comment had been in vain, as Rogue had thrown Sonic to the ground with her own blows, and was now looming over the hedgehog, preparing to crush his skull with part of an old statue.
"How about we see what your brains look like instead?" she snarled, and prepared to land the fatal blow when...
There was a sudden gunshot that echoed around the ruins of the city. Rogue released her grip on the statue, and collapsed forward next to Sonic, an anaesthetic dart sticking in her neck.
"Stun gun," Mac smirked as he blew away the faint trail of gunsmoke from the barrel of his revolver. "She'll be out for hours,"
Chapter Four
High noon had finally arrived.
The first traces of sunlight began to seep through the space in the dome, falling onto the Master Emerald like a spotlight onto a stage. Tikal and Knuckles braced themselves for what was to come. This ritual had only ever been performed to keep the Chaos Control in check, and never to restore stolen energies.
The sunlight continued to pour through the gap, and, as if in response, the intensity of the Master Emerald's glow began to grow brighter. Neon would have been a mere flicker by comparison. The power of centuries of generations combined onto that single spot like the crescendo of some celestial play, and climaxed with the silent omission of the most powerful light ever known...
Epilogue
The renewal of the Master Emerald's energies had reversed nearly all of the events instigated under Mephiles. Mobius and Anti-Mobius were returned to their original positions in space, and their original speeds through space were restored. But of the "barrier universe" did not return, for reasons that were never fully revealed.
Sonic and Knuckles had been knocked unconscious by the blast, but quickly recovered, and after locating one another, returned to tell of the news to their friends.
But Mac O'Damia and Rogue the Bat strangely disappeared during the blast. They were not found on either Mobius or Anti-Mobius, or indeed, on any of the alternate forms of Mobius that existed.
Their location has yet to be found.
